STATE AID: EUROPEAN COMMISSION APPROVES SUPPORT MEASURES FOR SKI LIFT OPERATORS

The European Commission has approved, in accordance with EU regulations on state aid, the measure provided for in the "Support Decree" (art. 2, Law Decree 41/2021) that compensates ski lift operators for the damages suffered during the COVID-19 emergency due to the restrictions that have prohibited public access to the lifts.

The scheme provides for a total budget of 430 million euros to be allocated to ski lift operators to compensate them for a portion of the damages suffered between December 4, 2020 and April 30, 2021.

The Commission found the measure to be in line with EU state aid rules under Article 107(2)(b) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and deemed the measure to be proportionate and found that the scheme will compensate for damages directly related to the pandemic, which qualifies as an "exceptional occurrence."

The decision came after an intense dialogue with the Commission by the Ministry of Tourism, with the support of the Permanent Representation of Italy to the EU and the Department for European Policies.
